Cummins names are unusually informative once you know the grammar. 6BT5.9 is six cylinders, B family, turbocharged, 5.9 litres. Everything you need to identify the engine is in the name — which is not true of most manufacturers.

The 4BT3.9 and 6BT5.9 have been in production since the mid-1980s and are still being rebuilt daily. They are mechanical, they are in everything from Dodge pickups to Dongfeng trucks to Case tractors to boats, and they were built in enormous numbers. If you supply the aftermarket in Southeast Asia, Africa or Latin America, B-family parts are a permanent line item rather than a fashion.
The same displacement spans mechanical and electronic generations, and they are not the same engine for parts. A 6BT5.9 and an ISB5.9 are both "Cummins 5.9", but the injection systems, and much that hangs off them, differ. When someone asks for "5.9 parts", establish mechanical or common-rail before quoting.
Equally, ISC and QSC — or ISL and QSL — being the same engine in different duty specifications means core parts cross but calibration-dependent parts may not. Quote against the engine serial where the part is anywhere near the fuel system.
